Transportation in Batam

Batam's transport is built around taxis, ride-hailing apps, and hotel shuttles. Taxis are everywhere but insist on the meter, drivers who quote a flat fare at the airport rank are asking a splurge. Grab and Gojek work island-wide and cost a fraction of a taxi. Download both before you land because some areas favor one over the other. Most mid-range and up hotels run free shuttles to the ferry terminals and Nagoya Hill. Book the ride when you reserve the room to avoid the taxi queue later. First-timers: the airport is only 20 minutes from the main ferry port. Yet the road can crawl at shift-change. If your flight lands late and the hotel shuttle isn't running, the Grab pick-up point is clearly signed, ignore the private "airport limo" touts who meet you inside baggage claim. Once in town, short hops around Nagoya or Batam Center are cheap on two wheels via Gojek's bike option. But skip the unmarked "taksi" vans that cruise the malls. They wait until full and then detour to every hotel on the island.
