Helpful Tips
Install Gojek or Grab before landing to book cars and motorbike taxis across Batam.
Buy a prepaid card at Harbour Bay ferry terminal for the Damri airport bus that runs to Hang Nadim.
Use the hourly Batam Fast ferry from Batam Centre to Singapore's Harbourfront. Book seats online to skip queues.
Negotiate taxi fares at Nagoya Hill Mall in advance, most trips within the city are under the metered airport rate.
Common Scams to Avoid
Unlicensed taxis at Hang Nadim Airport quote inflated flat fares to Nagoya or Harbour Bay instead of using the meter. Insist on the official airport taxi counter inside the terminal where fares are fixed and printed on a voucher.
Baggage porters in the arrivals area grab bags without being asked and then demand a high fee for the short walk to the curb. Politely decline any unsolicited help and keep your luggage in hand.
Currency-exchange kiosks just outside the secure area advertise "no commission" but give a markedly lower IDR rate than banks downtown. Change only a small amount at the airport and compare the displayed mid-market rate before accepting.
